MAEDER FUSING HER LOVE OF NATURE INTO HER ART & DESIGNS

Cheryl Maeder Interview Introducing Gardenhouse

I am excited to present a short video interview where I introduce Gardenhouse. Appreciating the inherent beauty and peaceful energy of Nature, and observing how much a part of it, we are, I have created Gardenhouse to merge the outdoor and indoor living experience. Pushing my art and design aesthetic further, personally inspired by my Dreamscapes photographs and my nature-inspired wall coverings, GardenWalls, I have launched my own Signature Collection of Home Décor Designs at Gardenhouse.

Enchanted, Interactive Mixed Media Art Installation at Cornell Art Museum

I have collaborated with Artist Diane Arrieta to create Enchanted, an Interactive Mixed Media Art Installation currently being exhibited at Cornell Art Museum through September 9th.

Enchanted focuses on the beauty and lessons we as humans can learn from our natural landscapes and inhabitants. This installation offers a moment of sanctuary from the fast paced indoor lives we are living. By constructing a faux natural environment, based on land and sea, the artists are conveying the need to “slow down and smell the flowers” before it [nature] disappears. Enchanted throws its audience a life preserver.

So excited to share a short documentary created at the Maeder Studio on our artistic process in creating Enchanted

NEW BEGINNINGS

January 2nd, 2018 by

A Christmas & Hannukah Story

In a few days, it will be the beginning of a new year. 2017 has not quietly swept by. There have been many shifts and transformations, both inside and out.

A few weeks ago, Gary and I moved to our new home and studio; a beautiful midcentury house right near the intercoastal waters of West Palm Beach. It is so open and airy both inside the home and studio, as well as, the neighborhood. My spirit and body just breathed a quiet sigh of happiness.

As you know, moving into a new home and studio sometimes comes with chaos when setting up a new internet system.   As with all in my life, it came first with upheaval and then transformed into miracles.

We moved in on a Monday, December 11th to be exact. On Tuesday, early in the morning, we set up all the computers. At 12:00 pm., I got a knock on the door that the AT&T cable guy had arrived for the installation. He looked friendly, and had a beard.   I was happy.   I thought he looked like a friendly Berkeley, California guy. It would all be okay. He then left the house and studio to take care of business and find the telephone pole. He knocked on my door, a half hour later, and informed me that he cannot go up the pole from my house. He stated, that if something happens to him and he falls, he could sue AT&T. I looked confused. He requested that I come with him to knock on various neighbors’ doors to see if they would let the AT&T cable guy enter their backyards to do the work on the pole. I reluctantly went with him, as it seemed strange to me. Also, I had not met the neighbors yet. I thought this was an odd way to meet them, being escorted by the AT&T cable guy. Well, it turned out that none of my neighbors were home. After an hour going around the neighborhood and knocking on doors, I was getting annoyed and embarrassed. The AT&T guy then advised me that he had to leave. He gave me his card, and told me to call him if a neighbor would consent to him entering their backyard to do the work. Left without internet service, and no ability to work, I called AT&T to tell them this strange situation and if they could send someone out so I could get service.

About 7:45 at night, I got a knock on our door, and reluctant cable guy was back and brought another cable guy with him. Once again they left to assess the situation. Finally somehow, though I don’t know how, they got up the infamous telephone pole. He knocked on my door again and this time informed me that he could not do the work again, as there were no cables on the pole. Perplexed, I could not understand why he couldn’t figure that out before by simply looking at the pole from my house? By this time, I changed my tune about him being friendly, Berkeley looking guy. In these few hours, he had now become the Unibomber cable guy.

The next day, early in the morning, happily -Ed, the AT&T cable guy appeared and apologized for the day before. As he left to go to the telephone pole, my worries were relieved that he didn’t make me go with him to knock on neighbors’ doors. This time it was different. Ed came back in a half hour and said all was fine. He had some work to do, but he promised me that all would be set up in a couple of hours. Ed – the saint of cable guys, kept his word. He did his job and then informed me that in a couple of hours, a new cable guy would come to install the internet with modem in my house. At 3:30 pm I received another knock on my door. Richard, the new and final AT&T cable guy, appeared. He walked in my house, saw the menorah sitting on the table and asked if it was just for show, or am I Jewish?   I said, I am Jewish, and he asked why I didn’t have a mezuzah on the door? I was so surprised! I had, literally, the first kosher cable guy on the planet! I told him I was going to put up a mezuzah, and he then said it has to be a kosher mezuzah! I was floored, I had never heard of a kosher mezuzah. Not only was I getting internet finally so I could work, I was also getting a Hebrew lesson in kosher mezuzahs! Richard was incredible, he came in joyfully and put my internet service together right there in front of me, complete with a new modem! He also enlightened me in certain spiritual, Judaic customs that I was not aware of.

The experience of putting in my internet was not only a joyful one, it was also a spiritual journey. I thanked Richard, and the universe for sending me Richard, who brought me both technology and light. And so from these three cable guys, in a town far from Bethlehem, my internet was finally born.

As a working artist, there never seems to be enough hours in the day working creatively at the studio or filming on location- then editing all the work. As if that is not enough, days are also spent on the marketing of the work! Sometimes the marketing takes over, and I have to allow more time for the creative to replenish my soul. However, I have now added another dimension: Teaching   For all the years spent on the many facets of the creative business, I am now taking pleasure in teaching others.

PHOTOGRAPHY AS ART WORKSHOP, Old School Square Creative Arts School, Delray Beach FL

In July, I gave a Workshop, Photography As Art, at Old School Square Creative Art School

I took the students on an assignment to Cranes Beach House. Such a beautiful and charming beach resort in Delray Beach. Before we went to the location, I conveyed to the students to think out of the box when photographing. Even though it might feel uncomfortable, branch out of what you know and push yourself to photograph in experimental ways. We then came back to the classroom and everyone worked on editing their images. It was so exciting for us all to see the transformations happening!  Every single student took the challenge and created wonderful work! I felt like a proud mama. It was such a wonderful day and everyone was having fun-I think me most of all!

Here are some images of our wonderful class!

A MAGICAL JOURNEY:  THE VOYAGE

I have been working on a new installation of fine art photographs and video installation: The Voyage.

I felt compelled to create “The Voyage” as a vehicle for Universal Connection.   Connecting the viewer with oneself & the magical environment that surrounds us, I wanted to create an awareness about the environment and that all living beings on the planet are affected by our actions. We are not separate from Nature. We are Nature.

ART OF THE PROCESS!

June 23rd, 2017 by

1 Day of Art Miami was an Open Call put out by the wonderful Miami Art Scene

It intrigued me, and drew my interest immediately. I sent in my work for possible selection.   I was informed some days later that my work was selected for 1 Day of Art Miami and I was to meet the following week at a location to begin my art project!

(t)here magazine, a beautiful gallery exhibition book, travels the world once a year to a designated city and selects artists; photographers, painters, writers – artists of all media to participate in an undisclosed editorial assignment. What is so incredible is that (t)here magazine is dedicated to creating content that is neither edited nor editorialized by their team, it is a gallery exhibition book that provides a free flow of original artistic content from beginning to end. I was completely enrolled in this venture!

On June 14th we all met at this wonderful, cool, hip hotel in Miami. The editors and staff were so warm and welcoming – I immediately relaxed into this adventure! The artists that were selected began to come into the conference room where we were meeting; we all became fast friends. Each of the artists selected an envelope with the words that they were given to inspire their project. I opened my envelope and discovered that I had selected the world “conformity”.  My head started spinning with negative thoughts about this word, and I laughed at myself and stayed in the present. I knew as uncomfortable as I was feeling, I was there to create and the City of Miami was my subject! It was just as exciting as it was uncomfortable and I know that is when magic happens! Here below are some of the photographs that were taken in South Beach inspired by the word “conformity”.

THE ART OF COLLABORATION: COLLABORATING IS MORE THAN JUST A WORD

December 16th, 2016 by

Dear Santa, I have not written in my blog for several months. Yeah, I know I have been a bad girl, however, please cut me some slack. I have actually been on an incredible creative roller coaster ride, and have just recently slowed down for the Holidays . I would like to share with you and my readers what has been going on at the Maeder Studio.

If I can say what has been the magic word for this year, It has been the word “Collaboration”. I read somewhere that we are now the “We” generation, because of the digital age, the internet and the global economy. This new age we find ourselves in, can be an age of true Connection and Collaboration. However, sweet the word “Collaboration” sounds, in reality, it is not easy to execute unless the work is created from Inside/Out. As in any relationship, whether work or personal, it takes true, honest communication. For Collaboration to truly work, it takes an openness with others and with the Self. This is not always comfortable, however, it is healing, expansive and allows for growth both creatively and emotionally!

And Now Some of the Projects I have been working on!

ARTIST TALK AT BAILEY CONTEMPORARY ARTS, BACA,

POMPANO BEACH, FL.

On Saturday, October 15th, Marilyn Walter, Irene Revelas of the Hacklab and I gave a talk on transforming S.T.E.M to S.T.E.A.M, the merging of Art with Science and Technology. I really enjoyed the conversation, as we each spoke of how we are merging these worlds into our work. Sarah Miller Benichou, Director of BACA  and Grace Gdaniec, Gallery Coordinator were so helpful and accommodating in making this event happen! It was a wonderful experience and hope to work more with BACA!

CELESTIAL BABIES PUBLIC ART BILLBOARDS, WPB

About eight months ago, Marilyn Walter came up to me with a fabulous idea! The Celestial Babies photographic project that I have been shooting and filming, would be perfect as Public Art Billboards, especially with inspiring words for text! I loved this idea and that is where our collaboration began. We met with Raphael Clemente, Director of Downtown Development Authority of West Palm Beach  and Teneka James, Associate Director. They both loved the Celestial Babies Billboards and with the funding of Downtown Development Authority and their amazing help, The Celestial Babies Public Art Billboards materialized in October! The Celestial Babies Series are about Connectedness. Connecting to ourselves, each other and the environment that surrounds us..

It was the first time exhibiting The Celestial Babies Space Installation. It was a collaboration with Artist Marilyn Walter and the Hacklab, Makers Space, Boynton Beach Fl. Marilyn Walter created the Retro looking Space Installation which housed the Celestial Babies Film. The Hacklab created the raspberry pi and computer coding inside the installation.

Behind the Scenes: The Filming of Celestial Babies

My apologies, I have not written in my blog for a month! Please forgive me, I have been working hard on my new photographic series Celestial Babies, as well as creating a film. As I had mentioned in a previous blog, I am collaborating with ISR Swim Instructors. I have been working closely with Krista Simpson, of Aqua Guppies and recently did a photoshoot also with Natalie Jones , another wonderful ISR Swim Instructor.

Last Sunday while parents and their babies filled my backyard, I was smiling inside recollecting the days when I photographed babies for fashion catalogues and advertising campaigns at my studio in San Francisco. Now I am again returning to photographing babies for this incredible project. The babies in these photographs appear to be floating in water but the photographs take on a much deeper meaning.

As in my artist statement,  I began photographing the babies and observing them as they were swimming and floating in the water. I could see the expressions on their faces and the joy of simply being.  As I observed the babies from a higher vantage point, I noticed that the babies were  not only swimming in water.  The babies appear to be  floating and suspended in Space.

Celestial Babies celebrates this return to innocence, joy and freedom. Through floating and swimming in water, the babies experience their natural connection to Water and their natural ability to swim.

Celestial Babies, New Photographic Series: Maeder collaborating with Krista Simpson, Aqua Guppies, ISR Infant Swim Instructor

In late December, my dear friend and Artist, Marilyn Walter, called me very excited!  She met with her friend, Krista Simpson, an ISR Infant Swim Instructor, and mentioned my photographic work to her! When Marilyn told me about possibly working with Krista, I jumped on it! I wanted to expand my creative work photographing humans and our relationship with Water. Krista and I met and the meeting was a mutual admiration. She is an amazing and accomplished woman, who lives her life to the fullest.

What I love about working with Krista is her passion, caring and wisdom when it comes to teaching the babies and children to swim. I began the Celestial Babies Series photographing Natasha. Natasha is an extremely happy baby and with Krista’s caring guidance, loves to swim. Natasha is a little “Esther Williams”. She becomes magical in the water. I am photographing the babies swimming in the pool, however, the work takes on a much deeper meaning. In the Celestial Babies photographs, the babies appear not only to be swimming in the water, but to be floating in the clouds and in space. I want to convey that human beings come into the world as energy, pure light, which is who we really are!

This past week I began to symbolically and physically Submerge into the waters and began shooting from the bottom of the pool. I love the perspective from this vantage point! Onward ho!

Here I am photographing Natasha underwater as she so happily jumps in!

Here I am underwater photographing! This image looks like my Dreamscapes Series.

I also had the extreme privilege of meeting the incredible Artist, Chuck Close at NSU Fort Lauderdale Museum! Chuck Close Photographs are now being exhibited at the Museum from March 20th through October 2, 2016. The exhibit is co-organized by Terrie Sultan, Director of the Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY. The exhibition is incredible as are all the exhibitions at NSU Fort Lauderdale Museum!  At the reception, I went over to talk to Chuck Close. He was so very humble and genuinely approachable. It was a peak experience for me.
