THE ART OF COLLABORATION: COLLABORATING IS MORE THAN JUST A WORD

December 16th, 2016 by

Dear Santa, I have not written in my blog for several months. Yeah, I know I have been a bad girl, however, please cut me some slack. I have actually been on an incredible creative roller coaster ride, and have just recently slowed down for the Holidays . I would like to share with you and my readers what has been going on at the Maeder Studio.

If I can say what has been the magic word for this year, It has been the word “Collaboration”. I read somewhere that we are now the “We” generation, because of the digital age, the internet and the global economy. This new age we find ourselves in, can be an age of true Connection and Collaboration. However, sweet the word “Collaboration” sounds, in reality, it is not easy to execute unless the work is created from Inside/Out. As in any relationship, whether work or personal, it takes true, honest communication. For Collaboration to truly work, it takes an openness with others and with the Self. This is not always comfortable, however, it is healing, expansive and allows for growth both creatively and emotionally!

And Now Some of the Projects I have been working on!

ARTIST TALK AT BAILEY CONTEMPORARY ARTS, BACA,

POMPANO BEACH, FL.

On Saturday, October 15th, Marilyn Walter, Irene Revelas of the Hacklab and I gave a talk on transforming S.T.E.M to S.T.E.A.M, the merging of Art with Science and Technology. I really enjoyed the conversation, as we each spoke of how we are merging these worlds into our work. Sarah Miller Benichou, Director of BACA  and Grace Gdaniec, Gallery Coordinator were so helpful and accommodating in making this event happen! It was a wonderful experience and hope to work more with BACA!

CELESTIAL BABIES PUBLIC ART BILLBOARDS, WPB

About eight months ago, Marilyn Walter came up to me with a fabulous idea! The Celestial Babies photographic project that I have been shooting and filming, would be perfect as Public Art Billboards, especially with inspiring words for text! I loved this idea and that is where our collaboration began. We met with Raphael Clemente, Director of Downtown Development Authority of West Palm Beach  and Teneka James, Associate Director. They both loved the Celestial Babies Billboards and with the funding of Downtown Development Authority and their amazing help, The Celestial Babies Public Art Billboards materialized in October! The Celestial Babies Series are about Connectedness. Connecting to ourselves, each other and the environment that surrounds us..

MAEDER EXHIBITION AT SCOPE ART FAIR MIAMI, GALERIE MARK HACHEM, ART BASEL WEEK 2016

A great way to end this year was exhibiting at Scope Art Fair with Galerie Mark Hachem during Art Basel Week. This was so exciting on many levels. It was the first time exhibiting The Celestial Babies Space Installation. It was a collaboration with Artist Marilyn Walter and the Hacklab, Makers Space, Boynton Beach Fl. Marilyn Walter created the Retro looking Space Installation which housed the Celestial Babies Film. The Hacklab created the raspberry pi and computer coding inside the installation.

This was a great creative year for my branching out and discovering new technologies in expanding my art. Moving from 2D to also 3D which brings me to the new year!

I am now in collaborations with Halo Technologies, a fantastic 3D Company in West Palm Beach. We are working on a 3D Installation which will be revealed in the New Year! So very exciting!

Stay Tuned and I wish you all the most wonderful Holiday Season!

Behind the Scenes: The Filming of Celestial Babies

My apologies, I have not written in my blog for a month! Please forgive me, I have been working hard on my new photographic series Celestial Babies, as well as creating a film. As I had mentioned in a previous blog, I am collaborating with ISR Swim Instructors. I have been working closely with Krista Simpson, of Aqua Guppies and recently did a photoshoot also with Natalie Jones , another wonderful ISR Swim Instructor.

Last Sunday while parents and their babies filled my backyard, I was smiling inside recollecting the days when I photographed babies for fashion catalogues and advertising campaigns at my studio in San Francisco. Now I am again returning to photographing babies for this incredible project. The babies in these photographs appear to be floating in water but the photographs take on a much deeper meaning.

As in my artist statement,  I began photographing the babies and observing them as they were swimming and floating in the water. I could see the expressions on their faces and the joy of simply being.  As I observed the babies from a higher vantage point, I noticed that the babies were  not only swimming in water.  The babies appear to be  floating and suspended in Space.

Celestial Babies celebrates this return to innocence, joy and freedom. Through floating and swimming in water, the babies experience their natural connection to Water and their natural ability to swim.

Celestial Babies, New Photographic Series: Maeder collaborating with Krista Simpson, Aqua Guppies, ISR Infant Swim Instructor

In late December, my dear friend and Artist, Marilyn Walter, called me very excited!  She met with her friend, Krista Simpson, an ISR Infant Swim Instructor, and mentioned my photographic work to her! When Marilyn told me about possibly working with Krista, I jumped on it! I wanted to expand my creative work photographing humans and our relationship with Water. Krista and I met and the meeting was a mutual admiration. She is an amazing and accomplished woman, who lives her life to the fullest.

What I love about working with Krista is her passion, caring and wisdom when it comes to teaching the babies and children to swim. I began the Celestial Babies Series photographing Natasha. Natasha is an extremely happy baby and with Krista’s caring guidance, loves to swim. Natasha is a little “Esther Williams”. She becomes magical in the water. I am photographing the babies swimming in the pool, however, the work takes on a much deeper meaning. In the Celestial Babies photographs, the babies appear not only to be swimming in the water, but to be floating in the clouds and in space. I want to convey that human beings come into the world as energy, pure light, which is who we really are!

This past week I began to symbolically and physically Submerge into the waters and began shooting from the bottom of the pool. I love the perspective from this vantage point! Onward ho!

Here I am photographing Natasha underwater as she so happily jumps in!

Here I am underwater photographing! This image looks like my Dreamscapes Series.

I also had the extreme privilege of meeting the incredible Artist, Chuck Close at NSU Fort Lauderdale Museum! Chuck Close Photographs are now being exhibited at the Museum from March 20th through October 2, 2016. The exhibit is co-organized by Terrie Sultan, Director of the Parrish Art Museum, Water Mill, NY. The exhibition is incredible as are all the exhibitions at NSU Fort Lauderdale Museum!  At the reception, I went over to talk to Chuck Close. He was so very humble and genuinely approachable. It was a peak experience for me.

Maeder Exhibits at Art Wynwood with Galerie Mark Hachem

February 11 thru February 15, I exhibited at Art Wynwood with Galerie Mark Hachem/Paris. Such a beautiful art fair! I so enjoyed exhibiting there and meeting interesting people from all over the world. I met Kevin O’Leary, a Shark’s on the television series Shark Tank. Kevin was exhibiting his photography work at Art Wynwood. All profits from the the sales of his photographs were to benefit Teenage Entrepreneurs and The Perry J. Cohen Foundation. I found him to be very gracious and sincere in person, so different from his Shark persona on TV.

BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS!

Gary and I were so very blessed to celebrate New Year’s Eve at our friend Cynthia Trone’s, backyard celebration with the Tibetan Buddhist Monks. Our friends Diane Arrieta and her husband Leslie also came with us. The monks were performing a New Year’s Sacred Ceremony. Before they began, Gary, Diane, Leslie and I sat down with them. As I spoke with the monks, they looked straight into my eyes, gave me a warm smile, and I could not see a trace of judgment. Made me smile all the way home.

“Icons in Style,” a Conversation with Iris Apfel and Naeem Khan

Another special event I attended was a talk at the Four Arts in Palm Beach with Iris Apfel, 94 year old Fashion and Design Icon and Naeem Khan, Fashion Designer. About ten years ago, Iris Apfel was asked to exhibit a retrospective of her fashion that she collected over many years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She became an overnight sensation after that and in demand as an 84 year old fashion model and icon. I was given a gift of the fabulous documentary “Iris” by Albert Maysles and I fell in love with her. I was so happy to see that she was going to be at the Four Arts and I headed to Palm Beach for the talk not knowing that the parking was completely packed with cars, because of Iris! I had to park several blocks away but it was worth it. I found a seat just five rows from the stage and happily listened as Iris and Naeem Khan spoke. Just wonderful!  I found Naeem Khan very sincere and humble as he spoke about his fashion career. I also found Iris to be just very matter of fact, humorous and profound.

    Loved it.

Maeder as Karl Lagerfield’s Assistant or Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction; Your Pick!!!

Gary and I were invited to our neighbor Margie Yansura’s birthday retro party. I had this great idea. Since my husband, Gary, is always told that he looks like a younger Karl Lagerfield, I decided to go as Karl’s assistant in a white shirt and jeans. What I didn’t realize was that no one at the party even knew who Karl Lagerfield was!  What was I thinking, West Palm Beach is not Miami? So there was my friend Julie sitting there with bad 80’s retro hair and we both looked like Edine and Patsy in the British Show, Absolutely Fabulous! When no one at the party knew that hysterical show, I became Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction!

EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS, THE OBSERVATIONS THAT FOLLOW

    December 23rd, 2015 by

I just reread my last blog post at Gardenhouse and realized it has been little over a month since my last blog post. Life has been full speed recently and I have not stopped still until this past weekend. I finally had time to chill and smell the roses or a least a facsimile in my backyard. There have been several shifts in my world, and I am looking at the world with a new set of eyes.

There are certain truths, and when experienced, change us for the best. One of the truths: It is not what we do in life that really matters, but who we are when we are doing it. Life is not about what we achieve. It is simply about loving and being loved. Some years back, a dear friend of mine Gordon, a writer, became ill with AIDS. For years, Gordon wanted his work published and for years that was Gordon’s quest. Until one day, I was on the phone with Gordan, and I asked how he was doing. He told me he was doing wonderful. He was happy. He told me that he did not care if he was published or not, that was not so important. What was important to Gordon was to love and be loved. It stopped me in my tracks and went straight to my heart. These last couple of weeks, I experienced this truth for myself. It hit home.

In life there are various events that take place and at the time seem so seamless. However, behind the scenes, the real work occurs! It transforms boys into men, and girls into women. It took me into its grip and I stayed with it until it all surfaced and produced the miracles! The premise behind my film Submerge!

Canvas Outdoor Museum, Submerge Film Exhibition Became a Reality

After so many months preparing Canvas Outdoor Museum became a reality in West Palm Beach, Florida. Artists came from all over the world to paint their beautiful art on buildings throughout the downtown West Palm Beach District. I was the artist selected locally and also the only artist creating a public art installation outdoors. Submerge, the film, was projected under the Royal Park Bridge Walkway. Also under the bridge walkway is the wonderful art mural of Artist Sean Yoro, a.k.a Hula , who was painting his mural as I was projecting Submerge.

Here is the public art video installation and the viewers who came by to see it!

Scope Art Fair 2015, Miami Beach, Galerie Mark Hachem, Paris

Went straight into exhibiting at Scope Art Fair 2015 with Galerie Mark Hachem/Paris just a few days after Canvas Outdoor Museum. The art fair was located right on the beach at South Beach. A beautiful location for art. Met some very wonderful people during the exhibition. Sometimes it feels like such a small world after all, and we are only six degrees of separation from each other. Is it a matter of luck, chance, or is it the magic of synchronicity!

During Scope Art Fair, exhibiting with Galerie Mark Hachem, The Center, Santa Fe, an amazing national photographic organization, brought a wonderful art tour to the booth to meet with me. Loved every minute of their visit!

Sitting here at my computer, waiting to go out to the location to set up for my film installation SUBMERGE . Waiting not so patiently, hoping there is no rain so that we can finally test the film projection at the location. The film installation is under the Royal Park Bridge Walkway, West Palm Beach (the middle bridge to Palm Beach). Finally after so many months of anticipation and planning, Friday, November 13th from 6:00 to 10:00 pm , I will be projecting the film every night through November 22nd. Canvas Outdoor Museum is finally here. Twenty world renowned artists flying in for the nations’ largest outdoor museum show. I am the local artist that was selected from West Palm Beach for the exhibition. It has been a long time coming and finally here! Please give good thoughts for sunshine tonight while I prepare to SUBMERGE!

Kick Off Party for Canvas Outdoor Museum Show, West Palm Beach

Saturday night was the opening Kick Off Party for Canvas Outdoor Museum Show. Can’t believe that the show will be happening in just a few weeks. November 8 – November 22nd. Twenty artists will be flying in from all parts of the world, and I am the only local artist from West Palm Beach that will be in the exhibition! I will be exhibiting my film SUBMERGE here in the USA for the first time! So very excited. Here are some photos from Saturday’s party!
